Courtney Barnett’s Mixtape Memoir:
Making Life Into Art

Australian singer-songwriter-guitarist Courtney Barnett first came on our radars here in the States in 2013 with the release of The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas, and a five minute song about gardening, an asthma attack, and pseudoephedrine, that also name checks Uma Thurman. An unlikely radio hit, Courtney's deadpan delivery and clever wordplay, like pairing Monday with mundane, along with her shredding guitar work was an irresistible combination and brought about well-deserved praise, saying her music was Bob Dylan meets Nirvana.

Once word spread about her amazing live shows and her full length debut arrived in 2015, called Sometimes I Sit and Think and Sometimes I Just Sit, it wasn’t long before Courtney Barnett was a household name. That album won four out of the eight ARIA Award nominations it received in 2015, and the following year, she was nominated for Best New Artist at the Grammy’s and Best International Female Solo Artist at the Brit Awards.

Courtney grew up in the late 80’s and 90’s on the coast of New South Wales, Australia, in a remote town north of Sydney. Raised in a creative household, Courtney's father was a graphic designer, and her mother a ballerina, Courtney spent much of her time hanging out with her older brother and his friends as a kid, and pre-internet, discovered music through a neighbor’s mixtapes.

We'll hear some of those songs and how Courtney was drawn to the magic of creativity - seeing it as a way to make something out of nothing. She found her way to a guitar, writing songs, all the while making visual art as another mode for documenting life as it happens, always with her keen observational eye, and tender wit. This week Courtney will release her third full length album, called Things Take Time, Take Time - a fitting title from an artist who makes witnessing the journey of life into an art form. Listen in now as Courtney Barnett joins us to create her Mixtape Memoir.
